Hell’s Gate National Park is a small Rift Valley park south of Lake Naivasha where you can cycle and walk among zebra, giraffe and buffalo, then hike into a deep volcanic gorge. Entry costs KSh 500 for East African adults and US$50 for non-resident adults in 2026, paid online before you arrive. Plan half a day for the park itself, or a full day if you add the gorge and the Olkaria Geothermal Spa.

It is about a 30 to 35 minute drive from our hotel, so we send a lot of guests there. Here is the honest version of what to expect.

What to do in Hell’s Gate National Park

Cycle among the wildlife

This is the main reason most people go. You ride along dusty tracks between tall red cliffs while zebra, giraffe, buffalo, warthog and gazelle graze nearby. The main track from Elsa Gate is mostly gentle, but the return leg can feel long in the midday heat. Read our guide to cycling in Hell’s Gate for route and bike tips.

See Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower

Two volcanic rock columns rise from the valley floor. Fischer’s Tower is close to the main gate and makes a good first stop; Central Tower stands near the head of the gorge. Both are popular with climbers.

Watch the geothermal steam

Plumes of steam rise from the Olkaria geothermal field inside the park, where KenGen runs power plants. It is a striking sight against the cliffs.

Soak at the Olkaria Geothermal Spa

The spa sits inside the park and uses naturally heated water in a series of lagoons. It opens daily from 8am to 5pm according to KenGen. It is a good way to finish a day of cycling, but remember the park fee applies on top of the spa charge.

The Hell’s Gate gorge walk

The gorge is a narrow canyon carved by water through soft volcanic rock, with hot springs, steep sides and some scrambling over rocks. It is the highlight for many visitors and the part that needs the most care.

  • Use a local guide. Guides work near the gorge entrance and know the safe routes. Confirm the current guide arrangement and price at the gate.
  • Check the weather. The gorge can flood quickly after heavy rain upstream. If rain is falling or forecast, skip it. This is not a risk worth taking.
  • Wear proper shoes. You will climb, slide and get your feet wet in places.

A simple one-day plan from Naivasha

TimePlan
7:30Breakfast and leave the hotel
8:10Arrive at Elsa Gate, collect bikes
8:30 to 11:00Cycle to the gorge area, stopping at Fischer’s Tower
11:00 to 12:30Guided gorge walk
12:30 to 1:30Picnic or packed lunch
2:00 to 4:00Olkaria Geothermal Spa (optional)
4:30Drive back for an evening boat ride or dinner

Worked example: what a day costs for two Kenyan adults

Park entry 2 × KSh 500 = KSh 1,000. Cycling fee 2 × KSh 300 = KSh 600. Bike hire and a gorge guide vary, so ask on the day. With those two items and your own transport, many couples spend roughly KSh 3,000 to KSh 5,000 for the day before lunch and the spa.

Getting to Hell’s Gate from Naivasha

Hell’s Gate sits south of Lake Naivasha, off Moi South Lake Road. Most visitors use Elsa Gate, the main entrance, which is the closest gate to Naivasha town and the lake hotels. A second entrance, Olkaria Gate, is further west near the geothermal plants and is handy if you are combining the park with the Olkaria Geothermal Spa.

From The Gem, the drive is roughly 30 to 35 minutes: head into town, then follow Moi South Lake Road along the lake until the signed turn-off to the park. The road is tarmac most of the way, and the final stretch to the gate is short. If you do not have a car, a taxi or a hired driver for the morning is the easiest option, and our front desk can help you arrange one.

Public transport is possible but slow. Matatus run along Moi South Lake Road, and you can ask to be dropped at the junction for the park, but you will then need a boda boda or a walk to the gate. For a half-day visit, a car saves a lot of time.

Visiting Hell’s Gate as a group

Hell’s Gate is one of the most popular group outings in Naivasha, especially after a conference. It is close, the activities suit mixed fitness levels, and it gets people out of the meeting room and talking. A few things are worth planning for when you bring a group.

  • Vehicle fees are per vehicle, per day. As of October 2026, Kenya Wildlife Service charges KSh 600 for a vehicle with fewer than 6 seats, KSh 1,500 for 6 to 12 seats and KSh 3,000 for 13 to 24 seats. A single coach is usually cheaper than several cars.
  • Pay online before you leave. Gates are cashless, and paying for a whole group on eCitizen takes longer than you think. Do it the day before and keep the receipts saved offline, because signal at the gate can be weak.
  • Bring the right ID for each person. The rate depends on the document each visitor shows: a national ID, an East African passport or a residence permit. Anyone without one pays the non-resident rate.
  • Split the group by energy level. Some people will want to cycle the full route and do the gorge. Others will be happier with a short ride to Fischer’s Tower and a picnic. Agree a meeting point and time before you split up.
  • Use a guide for the gorge. For a group, a guide keeps everyone together, knows the safe routes and tells you when the weather makes the gorge risky.

For a 20-person team with a 24-seat bus, the park side of the day looks like this: 20 East African adults × KSh 500 = KSh 10,000, plus KSh 3,000 for the vehicle, so KSh 13,000 before bikes, guides and lunch. If you are budgeting a whole retreat, our guide to conference costs in Naivasha shows how an outing like this fits into the total.

When to visit Hell’s Gate

The park is open all year, but the season changes the experience. The drier months, roughly January to March and July to October, are the most comfortable for cycling and the safest time for the gorge. During the long rains (around April to June) and the short rains (around November and December), tracks can get muddy and flash floods are a real risk in the gorge, so rangers may close it after heavy rain.

Time of day matters as much as the month. Arrive close to opening time and you get cooler air, softer light for photos and more animals moving around. By early afternoon the sun is strong and the dust picks up. If you can only go in the afternoon, plan for a shorter ride and take more water than you think you need.

Pros and cons of Hell’s Gate

ProsCons
Walk and cycle with wildlife, which most parks do not allowNo big cats or elephants, so it is not a classic safari
Close to Naivasha and an easy day trip from NairobiHot and dusty by midday
Affordable for Kenyan citizens and residentsThe gorge is not safe in heavy rain
Dramatic cliffs, towers and steam ventsRental bikes vary in quality, so check brakes before you set off

Tips, safety and what to bring

  • Start early. The first two hours after opening are the coolest and best for photos.
  • Bring water and sun protection. There is little shade on the cycling tracks.
  • Check your bike. Test the brakes and tyres before you leave the gate.
  • Keep your distance from buffalo. They look calm but can be dangerous. Give them plenty of space.
  • Carry ID. Your ID or passport must match the category you paid for.
  • Pack a light lunch or plan to eat at the spa restaurant.

Hell’s Gate pairs well with a sunset boat ride on Lake Naivasha. See our full list of things to do in Naivasha, and if you are camping nearby, Naivasha West Beach Camp is close to the park’s southern side.
