Bicycle Riding
There is no more liberating way to explore the African wilderness than on two wheels, moving at the pace of the land itself — quiet enough to hear the wind in the acacias, slow enough to watch a zebra without startling it, and free enough to stop wherever your curiosity leads. Cycling in the Naivasha region is an adventure that combines heart-pumping physical challenge with some of the most spectacular wildlife scenery in the Rift Valley.
Hell's Gate National Park
Hell’s Gate is famous for being the only national park in Kenya where you are actively encouraged to cycle among free-roaming wildlife, no guide required, no vehicle barrier between you and the animals. This unique freedom creates one of Africa’s most genuinely thrilling outdoor experiences, simultaneously humbling and exhilarating in equal measure.
The park’s well-maintained dirt tracks wind through dramatic volcanic scenery past Fischer’s Tower, through game-rich grasslands, and into the depths of the spectacular gorge. You are likely to find yourself pedalling within metres of grazing zebras and buffaloes — animals so accustomed to the presence of cyclists that they barely lift their heads as you pass. Giraffes stride across the track ahead, warthogs trot busily in the opposite direction, and the distant chanting of geothermal steam vents provides an eerie soundtrack to the ride.
The main loop through Hell’s Gate covers approximately 22 kilometres of varied terrain suitable for recreational cyclists, with optional gorge descents adding an element of technical adventure. Bicycles are available for hire at the park gate, and both half-day and full-day rides can be arranged. The combination of world-class wildlife encounters, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and genuine physical freedom makes a cycling trip through Hell’s Gate one of the most memorable activities available in the entire Naivasha region — a bucket-list experience that lives up to every expectation.
