Nature Walks
Nature walks around Naivasha offer an intimacy with the natural world that is simply impossible from inside a vehicle. Moving on foot through the landscape, you become part of it rather than a spectator of it — the sounds and scents of the bush envelop you, wildlife encounters feel genuinely personal, and the slow pace allows you to notice details that a game drive inevitably overlooks. From the extraordinary open wildlife sanctuary of Crescent Island to the mystical forest paths of Crater Lake, these guided walks are among the most memorable experiences the region has to offer.
Crescent Island
Crescent Island is quite simply one of the most extraordinary walking wildlife experiences in Kenya — a small, privately managed island peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Naivasha where visitors walk entirely without fences or barriers among free-roaming wildlife. There are no predators on Crescent Island, which means both you and the animals can relax into genuinely natural behaviour, creating wildlife encounters of a quality and intimacy that are almost impossible to replicate elsewhere.
Your walk begins at the lakeshore jetty, where the boat crossing itself often yields hippo and bird sightings, and continues into an open landscape of grassland and acacia woodland that feels like stepping into a gentler, quieter Africa. Giraffes browse just metres away, their enormous liquid eyes regarding you with calm curiosity. Herds of zebras part unhurriedly as your guide leads you through them. Wildebeest, waterbuck, Thomson’s gazelles, and impalas graze around you on all sides, entirely unbothered by your presence.
The birdlife on Crescent Island is exceptional even by Naivasha’s high standards. Fish eagles call from treetops as African spoonbills and yellow-billed storks wade in the shallows nearby. The island’s reputation as a film location — it doubled as the setting for the movie Out of Africa — adds a romantic cultural layer to an already magical experience. Guided walks last approximately two hours and are conducted by expert naturalists who bring the ecology and behaviour of each species vividly to life. Crescent Island is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and its unique combination of accessibility and authenticity makes it an unmissable highlight of any Naivasha visit.
Crater Lake
A nature walk around Crater Lake (Lake Sonachi) is one of Naivasha’s most enchanting and underrated experiences — a journey through dense riparian forest to a hidden volcanic lake whose vivid mineral-green waters and dramatic crater rim create a sense of having discovered something the rest of the world has not yet found. Protected within the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary, this walk weaves through one of the region’s most biodiverse forest habitats in an atmosphere of rare tranquillity.
The forest trail leading to the crater rim is rich with wildlife from the very first steps. Black-and-white Colobus monkeys perform acrobatic leaps through the fever tree canopy above, while Sykes’ monkeys chatter in the mid-storey. The forest floor is alive with the rustle of bushbucks, and patient observers may spot the shy greater kudu among the thicker vegetation. Your naturalist guide reads the forest like a text, pointing out tracks, signs of predator activity, and the remarkable diversity of bird species — Hartlaub’s turaco, Ross’s turaco, and the stunning African paradise flycatcher among them.
Emerging onto the crater rim delivers the walk’s most dramatic reward: the lake’s jade-green waters, edged with a thin strip of open shoreline where flamingos sometimes gather in their thousands, lie 70 metres below in perfect stillness. The silence on the rim is absolute except for wind and birdsong, and the sensation of standing on the lip of an ancient volcano above a hidden lake is profoundly memorable. The sanctuary also supports leopards, though sightings are rare and deeply exciting when they occur. The full walking circuit around the crater rim and back through the forest takes approximately three hours and represents some of the finest nature-walking terrain in the entire Rift Valley.
